The China-Japan relationship is important—economically it is important; China is Japan’s largest trading partner.  

中日关系十分重要——经济上尤其关键；中国是日本最大贸易伙伴。

But it’s a complex relationship, partly because of the U.S.–China strategic competition.  

但这段关系复杂，部分源于中美战略竞争。

Everything that China and Japan does is seen through that larger prism.  

中日一举一动都置于这一大棱镜下。

They also have a dispute in the Senkaku Islands, and of course there is also the hang-over of history from the Second World War, which still remains between the two countries.  

两国在钓鱼岛有争端，二战历史遗留问题也仍未消散。

We hope the two countries will find ways to resolve these very complex issues and move forward.  

希望双方能找到化解之道，继续向前。

Southeast Asia has done that with Japan.  

东南亚已与日本做到了这一点。

As far as history is concerned, it has taken some time, but with the passage of time, with the passing of generations, the feelings are not the same, and we have put the history aside and we are moving forward.  

历史问题耗时多年，世代更替后情感已不同，我们已搁置历史，携手前行。

It is quite striking that, in surveys of Southeast Asians, Japan is the number-one trusted great power in Southeast Asia, and all the Southeast Asian countries support Japan playing a bigger role in our region, including on the security front, because we think that provides for some stability in the region.  

调查显示，日本是东南亚最受信任的大国，各国均支持日方在包括安全领域发挥更大作用，以为地区带来稳定。

(Do you think poking the dragon in the way that Prime Minister … did—do you think that was advisable?)

Well, I’m not her adviser; I can just judge the wisdom of … very few people. I can judge the wisdom of whether or not … I know what … what she said was wise to do. But it has been said—it can’t be unsaid now.  

我不是她的顾问，很少评判他人智慧。话已出口，无法收回。

Yes, so it is there; there will be a difference of views, clearly. I think both sides … I think on the Japanese side they clearly want to bring things back to stabilize the relationship and not cause this to escalate further, and I hope China will feel the same way.  

显然分歧已现。日方显然希望稳住关系、避免升级，我也希望中方同样如此。
